Welcome to Design and Technology
Design and Technology holds responsibility for a vast array of subjects based on Technologies which develop learners to be purposeful members of society. We teach students from age 11 to 18 (1st to sixth year)The Qualifications available though our department are as follows: Graphic Communication; National 4,5, Higher and Advanced Higher Design and Manufacture; National 4,5, Higher and Advanced Higher Engineering Science; National 4,5, Higher and Advanced Higher Practical Craft Skills, National 3 Design and Technology; National 3 Woodworking skills; National 4, 5 Metalworking skills; National 4,5 Practical Electronics; National 4,5 Young STEM leaders Award (SCQF 5,6) (subjects in pink are currently not offered at Belmont Academy) The national qualifications are underpinned though the learning which takes place in the first three years of secondary school the Broad General Education (BGE). Currently all first and second year pupils receive two 50 minute periods to develop their knowledge and skills before being in a position to make decisions on their desired specialisms in third year. Learners then progress through third year focusing on learning which prepares them more specifically for their national qualifications in the senior phase (fourth-sixth year). BGE Assessment. The assessment of learning in the BGE is split in to two categories knowledge and understanding and technological capability. Assessment of knowledge and understanding is assessed and developed through class discussion, homework tasks and end of unit tests. This is assessment which accumulates in the written aspect of SQA examinations in the subjects listed above. (Learning developed through the contexts of challenges set around the Experiences and Outcomes of Curriculum of Excellence) Assessment of skills, attitudes and technological ability is taken from the learners ability to demonstrate an aptitude to independently make choices and decisions which, allowing them to best resolve a given problem, or present a design proposal to a set brief. This assessment accumulates in Added Value projects at National 4 and Course Assignments at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher. Briefs are progressively more challenging through the BGE giving learners the opportunity to extend beyond their assessment level fostering the creativity and personalisation of experience which Design and Technology offers. *(learners demonstrate their progression of skills within the experiences and outcomes (E's & O's) by applying the breadth of skills and knowledge to create solutions to increasingly complex challenges assessable against the benchmarks of learning. This assessment is used to set CofE level progress [3rd and fourth level progression in secondary school unless 2nd level has not yet been achieved when entering secondary school]) More information on benchmarks here.
